The insurance industry struggles to attract and retain next generation professionals.  Here, speaks with Monica Ningen, Head Property Underwriting in the U.S. & Canada at Swiss Re about the Talent Gap in the insurance industry.  She was named to Business Insurance’s list of Woman to Watch in 2015, and shared her thoughts on the misconceptions about a career in risk and insurance.

Ms. Ningen notes a large number of professionals will be retiring in coming years, and the industry is not hiring at a rate that will adequately fill that hole. She believes there needs to be better education about the long-term career opportunities in the industry. According to a study conducted by The Institutes, 44% of people surveyed see the industry as “boring.”

Ms. Ningen points out that there are many types of professionals in the industry, including hydrologists, mathematicians, economists, even music majors. She points out insurance is part of virtually every economy in the world and helps build resilient communities.  In short, “it’s a great place to have a long career.”
