Hurricane Season Preview: Below-average activity forecasts have been dependable; not so the number of storms.

NOAA and other forecasters are predicting a below to normal hurricane season ahead, with El Niño conditions producing a rather mild weather pattern. In a Hurricane Season Preview, WRIN.tv speaks with Dr. Tim Doggett, Assistant Vice President and Senior Principal Scientist at AIR Worldwide, which just released its own Hurricane Season Preview.

According to Dr. Doggett  “The forecasts that have come out in the past month...all have the same theme. The expectation is for below-normal activity in the Atlantic Basis - about 10 named storms, of which five are expected to become hurricanes, between one and two would become a major hurricane at some point.  The common theme reflects the expectation (that) El Niño conditions will be developing in the Pacific over the Pacific and into the Fall, and …sea temperatures in the Atlantic have been cooler than they have been in the last few years. The combined effect ...is less activity in the Atlantic Ocean….”   Other factors, says Dr. Doggett,  that have to be taken into consideration include the “impact of warm Saharan air coming out of Africa and the Madden–Julian oscillation that causes 30 – 60 days of enhanced or suppressed activity. “

In general, Dr. Doggett says “the idea that the activity will be above- or below-normal is dependable.”  The prediction of how many storms will develop is not, as it depends on too many variables.  Even with predictions of a mild hurricane season, Dr. Doggett reminds viewers that“it really only takes one big storm to have a major impact on the industry…The total number of storms really doesn't dictate what will happen in terms of landfalling events and what we will see in the industry.“

Throughout the 2014 hurricane season, WRIN.tv will partner with AIR Worldwide to bring you a new series of late-breaking reports called "Eye on the Storm."  As named storms threaten landfall and major loss activity, AIR Worldwide will return to WRIN.tv with complete details so risk and insurance managers can react and manage mitigation and claims activity. Signup today for WRIN.tv  Video News Alerts to keep up throughout the 2014 Hurricane season.
