Agents and brokers are intermediaries that facilitate the purchase of risk transfer products, including insurance and reinsurance. Independent insurance agents are self-employed and represent several insurance companies, exclusive or captive agents represent insurance companies called direct writers. Brokers are market specialists who represent insurance or reinsurance buyers in developing and executing risk transfer transactions with underwriting companies.
