ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 07, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA) today announced that E. Benjamin Nelson, a former two-term U.S. Senator from Nebraska, will serve as the featured keynote speaker for LISA’s 23rd Annual Fall Life Settlement & Compliance Conference, to be held October 15th-17th at the beautiful Sandpearl Resort in Clearwater Beach, Fla.

“We’re honored that Sen. Nelson has agreed to share his vast knowledge and experience working on insurance issues at both the state and federal level – as well as in the private sector – to speak to conference attendees about what they can expect in coming years for the life settlement market,” said Darwin M. Bayston, CFA, president and chief executive officer of LISA.

Sen. Nelson is a partner at Heartland Strategy Group. Previously, he served as chief executive officer of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) from 2013-2016. He served two terms representing the State of Nebraska in the U.S. Senate (2001-2013) and was elected to two terms as Governor of Nebraska (1991-1999). Sen. Nelson has extensive experience in the insurance sector, starting his career in insurance law and later serving as chief executive officer of the Central National Insurance Group, as Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President of the NAIC, and as Director of the Nebraska Department of lnsurance.

“LISA’s Fall Conference will bring together professionals who participate in all aspects of the life settlement industry – brokers, providers, institutional investors, actuaries, attorneys, accountants and many other industry professionals – for a program that combines a breadth of serious educational content with informal networking opportunities,” said Bayston.

This year’s event will once again open with a special Compliance Track for compliance professionals and attorneys, which will be hosted on Sunday, October 15th. Participants will attend sessions to help them maintain compliance standards for themselves, their companies and their business partners. They will also obtain updates on new laws, as well as recent and pending litigation, and are eligible to obtain CLE credits.

The main conference takes place on Monday, October 16th and Tuesday, October 17th. The theme for this year’s Fall Conference is “Charting the Course” and conference sessions will focus on topics such as:

  • A tax and securities update (Lawrence Hamilton and Mark Leeds) that will address some of the critical issues surrounding tax treatment of life settlement transactions and the status of life settlements under federal securities laws;
  • A life insurance commissioners panel (led by Jay Florence) that will discuss regulatory issues such as consumer disclosure requirements and cost of insurance concerns;
  • A session (John Dallas, Tim Demars, Clay Gibson and Sheri Townsend) that addresses key issues that must be managed after the purchase of a life insurance policy, such as dealing with difficult insurance carriers and complicated premium options; and
  • A discussion (Darryl Glatthorn and Jon Mendelsohn) about how to create a sustainable supply of policies in the secondary market.
