California Insurance Dept. warns insurers against price optimization

The California Department of Insurance warned insurers against using price optimization to set rates, calling the practice “unfairly discriminatory” and a violation of state law. Ohio and Maryland have also prohibited the practice, which is used by insurers to set rates based on an individual’s, or class of individuals’, willingness to pay a higher premium relative to others.
